Week 6: Jehovah's Witness culture

    The focused culture for this week centered on the members of the Jehovah's Witness faith, a Christian denomination often associated with specific standards such as, more specifically for healthcare workers, their refusal of blood transfusions. With this in mind, I wanted to further educate myself on their operational alternatives to prevent excessive blood loss and rapid mortality. Alternative options include iron supplements and smoking cessation within a certain period before the procedure and the use of cell-saving systems alongside erythropoietin. According to a study conducted with these methods in 2016, there was no higher mortality rate using such precautions.

    Beingdevoutly religious myself, I recognize how important these mattes can be to members of the Jehovah's Witness faith. For many, such life-saving dilemmas are difficult with such standards, but one does not understand this faith's reasoning unless they are a member of this congregation. In the progressive society today, acceptance of gender and sexual preferences are vocally pushed, but it must be recognized that oppression and bigotry against religious groups exist today.

Week 8: Catholic culture

    The eighth week discussed Catholic culture in depth. My literature search allowed me to educate myself on contrasting catholic and secular health ethics according to an Australian study. Although many healthcare workers were employed at Catholic healthcare facilities, many did not base their ethical decisions on Catholic standards but on those of the secular. Despite the difference, many parallels could be drawn between religious and secular ethics. For example, Catholic based healthcare sought to care for the body and the soul, whereas secular ethics sought to care for the body mentally, physically, and socially.     Catholic culture drew many similarities to typical Christian health values such as opposition to abortion and a strong belief in life after death being in "a better place." Hearing other students findings aided to complete this week's subject and inspired a deeper dive into catholic culture.

Week 15: Polynesian

      Polynesian culture is yet another wide-reaching description for many varieties of people. I chose to focus on their religious side, more specifically on the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, which makes up 60% of certain Polynesian populations. I found how deeply integrated moral values are in their culture and the synchronicity of their religion and cultural ideals.     Other students highlighted variations between differing Polynesian cultures. Many often forget that Hawaiin culture is a part of this family and has somewhat influenced its integration into the United States. Each culture has its own subculture, we are therefore responsible to remain aware of this and not based cultural understandings on specific portions of nationality, race, or groups.

Week 13: Judaism

     In both religion, heritage, culture, and nationality characteristics, the Jewish culture is rich with history and beauty of tradition. In my personal research, I was able to learn more about Yiddish culture and language. As a part of Jewish culture, the Yiddish language has grown and fallen throughout history. Despite a fall in its presence due to the tragedy of the Holocaust, Yiddish speaking groups have grown and arisen in recent decades, especially resonating with Millenials and Gen-Xers. Other students revealed more tragic facts regarding the Holocaust and highlighted the significance of a Kosher diet.      The Jewish culture retains many ancient traditions from a vast history of culture and beliefs tied to the Law of Moses. Through increased educational pursuits, I have begun to grasp some of their cultural treasures.
