Week 14: Asian

     The topic of Asian culture does not well define a specific group of people. For example, Japanese Culture and Thai culture are quite different despite their proximity. This allowed for a larger view of cultural research. I focused on the agricultural aspect of East Asian culture and the impact of rice. Rice farming is an intensely demanding agricultural tradition that has shaped the culture of this population. Another student focused her insights on the country of Laos, perhaps a lesser-known group in comparison to the larger Asian countries.

     Each country within a continent has its own defined culture. From city to city or state to state, one can learn of the communal practices that are often celebrated by a people.

Week 8: Catholic culture

    The eighth week discussed Catholic culture in depth. My literature search allowed me to educate myself on contrasting catholic and secular health ethics according to an Australian study. Although many healthcare workers were employed at Catholic healthcare facilities, many did not base their ethical decisions on Catholic standards but on those of the secular. Despite the difference, many parallels could be drawn between religious and secular ethics. For example, Catholic based healthcare sought to care for the body and the soul, whereas secular ethics sought to care for the body mentally, physically, and socially.     Catholic culture drew many similarities to typical Christian health values such as opposition to abortion and a strong belief in life after death being in "a better place." Hearing other students findings aided to complete this week's subject and inspired a deeper dive into catholic culture.

Week 13: Judaism

     In both religion, heritage, culture, and nationality characteristics, the Jewish culture is rich with history and beauty of tradition. In my personal research, I was able to learn more about Yiddish culture and language. As a part of Jewish culture, the Yiddish language has grown and fallen throughout history. Despite a fall in its presence due to the tragedy of the Holocaust, Yiddish speaking groups have grown and arisen in recent decades, especially resonating with Millenials and Gen-Xers. Other students revealed more tragic facts regarding the Holocaust and highlighted the significance of a Kosher diet.      The Jewish culture retains many ancient traditions from a vast history of culture and beliefs tied to the Law of Moses. Through increased educational pursuits, I have begun to grasp some of their cultural treasures.

Week 2: Cultural Diversity

      Week 2 has consisted of a deeper study into the significance of cultural diversity, paired with a cultural analysis of our chosen final culture. I began my research in the UVU online Fulton library in search of an article that would represent adequate ideas of the importance of cultural diversity. I found one that was published directly aiming to educate nurses and other healthcare professionals. Focusing mostly on proper translation, avoidance of microaggressions, and assessing health literacy. Most of these techniques have been taught to us in the program, especially in establishing proper therapeutic communication, but the idea of a microaggression had not yet been brought to my attention.     Microaggressions can often be so overlooked and sought to be genuinely positive comments. Phrases such as "your English is so great" or "where are you originally from" may seek like a friendly inquisition, but these undermine an individual's character to solely on...
